A creamy, hot drink, one that is made from root of salep. A great ally in the fight against flu and cough and could formerly be found in a pure form.
Today it is found increasingly in other varieties and derived from other plants, but if you prefer it in its pure form then choose salep powder. When choosing, make sure the product is manufactured in Turkey.
Here’s how to prepare this winter drink:
• 4 cups milk
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 tablespoon salep powder
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Mix the salep powder together with the sugar, then add the milk (cold), The mixture should be thoroughly whipped in a blender to melt any lumps in it. Then put the mixture to boil. Once boiled, reduce the temperature and keep boiling while stirring constantly until you get a thick mixture. Salep is best when it is thick, but be careful so it doesn’t remain in a liquid form. Boiled salep is served in cups and then sprinkled with cinnamon.
Not only is it tasty but salep has many healing powers, cleanses the throat, soothers the airways and reduces or completely cures a cough.
