In Case Of Emergency, Remove Your Bra. This Is Not Silly, This Is Science!

Scientists discover new ways to help us every year. An Ukrainian scientist, dr. Elena Bodnar, created an, so called “emergency bra”. This bra is actually turned to a face mask in emergencies, and can be used to protect people from many different hazards, chemical explosions and attacks.

It looks like a normal bra, but when it’s removed and the cups are separated, similar to oxygen masks in planes, and can be put over the mouth and nose, while the bra strap is holding it tight on the back of your head. There are 2 masks that come out, which can save not only the woman who wears the bra, but also another person near her.

In 2009 Elena Bodnar won the Ig Nobel Public Health Prize, which is similar to the original Nobel Prize, with one remark. It gives awards to 10 discoveries in science that “first make people laugh, and then make them think.”

When she accepted the award, in her speech Dr. Bodnar said, “It takes only 25 seconds for average woman [sic] to use this personal protective device. Five seconds to remove, convert and apply your own mask, and 20 seconds to wonder who the lucky man is she is going to save“.

She actually was inspired to create this invention after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986.

She says, “If people had had cheap, readily available gas masks in the first hours after the disaster. They may have avoided breathing in Iodine-131, which causes radiation sickness. You have to be prepared all the time, at any place, at any moment, and practically every woman wears a bra.”

There are also more uses for the mask, for protection against swine flu, dust storms, fires and many more.
