The Reason Why You Have Cramp On Your Legs During The Night, Plus This Is The Way How To Prevent It From Happening Ever Again
Have you ever been woken up by a sharp pain in your legs? You’ve had a night leg cramp. These leg cramps are most common in people over 50. They usually appear in the lower part of your leg. Sometimes, not so often, they can appear in your feet or thighs. The pain differs: it can last for a couple of seconds or a few minutes. When it’s over, you still might be able to feel sore in the affected area.
However, it can be confusing to know if you’ve experienced a leg cramp or you have the restless leg syndrome. The difference is that restless leg syndrome is an urge to move your legs on a neurological basis (it’s a disorder). When you do so, the uncomfortable feeling is gone. When you experience leg cramps, even after you move your legs the pain is still there.
Here are some of the causes of leg cramps:
- Bad posture
- Sitting for too long
- Being pregnant
- Drinking certain pills or other medications
- Exercising a certain way
- Drinking too much alcohol
If you have consistent leg cramps, here are some tips to help you:
- Applying a heating pad on the affected areas
- Increasing your magnesium and potassium intake
- Exercising in water
- Eating chestnuts
- Using ergonomic shoes
- Stretching the legs and a warm bath before going to bed
Also, if you have muscle spasms in your sleep, here are a couple more tips:
- Get down on the floor, sit on your backside with your legs ahead of you. Bend the feet so that the toes are pointing to your knees. Then, carefully pull the feet and stretch your legs.
- Gently start standing up, and turn around while shaking your legs to get the blood flow going.
- Start rubbing the painful areas.
- Take a tablespoon of yellow mustard to relieve the pain.
