Quaker Oats Is Being Sued For Putting A Cancer-Causing Pesticide In Their Oatmeal
Quaker Oats products are labeled that they contain ”100% Natural Whole Grain” also there is a text in bold that’s written ”Old Fashioned”.
This was a good enough reason to gain many consumers over the time, but recently the same company got sued for misleading tactic in the label.
Costumers from New York and California filed a lawsuit against the owner, the main allegation was that this oatmeal contains traces of the pesticide glyphosate.
The test of the Quaker Oats Quick 1-Minute oatmeal, took place in an independent lab in California. Researchers used liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, which is a procedure often used by medical and chemical labs for drug research.
The New York Times reported that in a test paid for by lawyers for the plaintiffs, the Richman Law Group, glyphosate was detected at a level of 1.18 parts per million in a sample of Quaker Oats Quick 1-Minute, or 4 percent of the 30 parts per million that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) allows in cereal grains.
But still the company was sued for false advertising since it claims that their product is ”100% Natural”.
The Quaker Oats Company replied that they did not use this chemical in the oatmeal, so its traces are probably due to the pesticides sprayed on the oats by farmers. They declared:
Any levels of glyphosate that may remain are trace amounts and significantly below any limits which have been set by the E.P.A. as safe for human consumption.
This chemical is widely used in the world not just in U.S. and many food activists condemn the use of it, claiming that it causes health issues.
Just recently in 2015 the International Agency for Research on Cancer (part of the World Health Organization) claimed that these pesticides are in the category of probable cause of cancer.
Other than that this chemical can lead to many other health issues, such as of probable cause of cancer. In Paraguay a study was conducted where, 1 kilometer from the areas in which glyphosate is sprayed there is doubled risk for birth defects.
Experts suggest that because glyphosate interfere with the vitamin A and reduce the amount of it, which this vitamin is essential for fetus development.
Researchers have found a strong correlation between Roundup exposure and Attention Deficit Disorder in farming communities, which many experts attribute to glyphosates ability to disrupt thyroid hormone functions. Glyphosate has also been shown to have adverse effects on the bodys production of serotonin.
This can severely affect someones mood appetite, and sleep, and serotonin impairment has frequently been linked to depression.
Oats have magnificent health benefits when are not loaded with chemicals. Remember to choose organic oats a never go for the cheap and quick alternative, which in many cases are loaded with pesticide.
